How to Book

Booking is flexible and easy, simply telephone the Education Office on 020 7940 6336, 020 7940 6348 or 020 7940 6367 to discuss your needs and a time for your visit.  Alternatively, you can e-mail on hms-edu@iwm.org.uk or send a fax on 020 7940 6369, providing the following information:

  • Your group's name and contact details
  • The date and time of your intended visit
  • The number and age of learners
  • The number of accompanying adults
  • The group leader's name
  • Whether you would like to book an educational session
  • Whether any group member has special needs

Our education staff are fully trained teachers who will be happy to tailor an educational session for your group if they are focusing on a specific topic, or curriculum subject.

Admission Policy and Cost

We have no maximum size of group but parties of over 60 may be asked to board in smaller groups to avoid congestion on the Quarterdeck.
Children under 16 will not be admitted unless accompanied by an adult
Requested staff to pupil ratio is 1:10 for pupils in Key Stage 1 and 2, primary school (or equivalent age if a youth group)
For Key stage 3 and above, Secondary age pupils, recommended staff to pupil ratio is 1:10 (1:15 is our minimum staff to pupil ratio, for health and safety reasons groups will be turned away if they do not comply).
All pupils must be supervised by their accompanying adults and the group will be asked to leave the ship if this is not adhered to. We recommend that groups divide into smaller numbers whilst exploring the ship.
School children under 18 years (or any children under 16) are free of charge - for groups that pre-book, one adult is also admitted free for every ten children. Additional adults to that ratio are charged adult group rate, which is currently £8.25 (rising to £8.60 in 2009). Groups of students are charged £6.70 (rising to £7.50 in 2009). All our education sessions are free of charge.

Practical Points For Your Visit

Access

The ship has disabled access and disabled toilets on board, but only two of her nine decks can be accessed without climbing or descending ladders. Every effort is made to accommodate those with special needs - please speak to our education staff. A virtual tour of the ship is now available on the wheelchair-accessible 2 Deck - see the online version!

Lunch

A small packed lunch room (seating 30) can be pre-booked at no charge. Weather permitting, many groups choose to eat a packed lunch on the open decks. The Walrus Café serves a good selection of hot and cold food.

Clothing

Clothing suitable for outdoors is strongly advised, flat shoes and backpack allow easier movement up and down the ladders.

Time on Board

For those just wishing to explore the ship, please allow a minimum of one hour for your group to negotiate their way around. If you have booked an educational session, you need to extend your time on board to accommodate this.

A pre-visit 'recce'

Contact the education staff who are happy to send a complimentary ticket to teachers wishing to explore prior to their group's visit.
